African painting : Knife Art

First of all a bit of history, it will be just a small recap!
It is an invention from the United States, created beginning of the century, in the thirties. It is the fruit of researches on bindings; it constitutes the most striking progress in painting's field over the past hundred and fifty years.
This new painting explodes in the fifties, with the marketing of acrylic resin based paints. It arrives in France in the sixties, but vinyl color's stability remains uncertain at this stage. Since then considerable progress has been made in its composition. Extremely versatile, it has most of the advantages of oil painting.
The acrylic textures that Tanzanian artists use are really basic. These painters employ acrylate of polyvinyl color base; which has cheaper pigments.
The benefit of this material is that it dries very quickly. All kind of supports are possible; the only precaution to take is that it must be wax and oil free. However it is not the case for artists based in Tanzania, since they use whatever materials they can find in order to express their talent!
To create a pasting effect, we can apply, with knives or spatulas in the west (wood, brushes etc in Tanzania) the color in thick masses, without touching up due to fast drying process.
This art is used to retranslate or represent Masai's villages, Masai's warriors as well as herd's man. Without forgetting that different Masai tribes are living between Tanzania and Kenya; which allows the artists to highlight outfit's characteristics amongst other things and their arms, either spears or knives. The details of their huts also come out in contrast, as they are made out of mud, twigs etc.
